Museum of Modern Arts recognises Ghanaian designer
Ghanaian fashion designer and CEO of Stylista, Araba Stephens Akompi, has joined the club of world-renowned fashion designers whose designs have been selected for exhibition by The Museum of Modern Arts in NewYork City.
The exhibition, titled “Items: Is Fashion Modern?” started last month and runs till January 28 next year. One hundred and eleven different garments, accessories, and other wearables which have shaped the world of fashion are being displayed.

Araba Stephens Akompi’s ensemble was selected as one of two clothes designed for Vlisco using Dutch wax print. Her design was chosen to exhibit how much wax prints have influenced the world of fashion over the years.
In an interview with theDaily Graphic, Araba said it was a moment of pride to have her designs exhibited among some of the greatest fashion designers such as Chanel, Christian Dior,Givenchy and Versace.
“I see this as a recognition of my hard work and challenges. It shows that all the challenges over the years have been worth it. It is also a compliment to my creativity to have my design exhibited together with those of renowned designers in the fashion world,” she said.
She bemoaned the lack of support for the creative arts industry in our part of the world and urged stakeholders not to give up but work harder for acknowledgement.

Its collection offers an overview of modern and contemporary art,including works of fashion, architecture and design, drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, prints, illustrated books and artist's books, film and electronic media.
