MUSIGA boss commends Wazumbians

PRESIDENT of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Bessa Simons, has praised the Wazumbians band for being worthy ambassadors of Ghana on their travels.

According to the MUSIGA boss, he was a keen fan of the band and had been following their exploits both in Ghana and when they travel on tour.

“I know they always proudly represent Ghana with their music, their costumes and how they interact with audiences. They have been consistent and keep improving all the time,” Bessa Simons said.

He was speaking when members of the band paid a courtesy call on him and other national executives of the union when they returned from their latest tour in the United States. The tour was from March to November this year and the band played gigs in several states including New York, Philadelphia, Virginia, Idaho and North Carolina.

The band’s leader, Francis Chapman Abban-Hagan, known widely as Wazumbi, presented an undisclosed amount of money on behalf of the band and its management to the Aging Musicians Welfare Fund (AMWeF), an arm of MUSIGA which raises funds to support old musicians.

Bessa Simons received the money on behalf of AMWeF. Also present at the presentation were the union’s General Secretary, Kofi Agyeman and the National Organiser, Chizzy Wailer.

Wazumbi said the amount was a token to show appreciation for MUSIGA’s support for the band. He was at the union’s office with other members of the band, some of whom were not part of the American tour.

The band’s leader pointed out that Wazumbians is a big family of musicians and dancers and specific gigs determined which performers were deployed. This year’s Wazumbians US tour was a follow-up to the one they did between July and September, 2022.

Bessa Simons thanked the band for their gesture and recollected that they made a donation to AMWeF when they returned from the 2022 tour.

“They always go and they come back to tell us they are back. I thank them on behalf of MUSIGA and AMWeF and the entire music fraternity in Ghana. We wish them more successes,” the MUSIGA President said.
