Nana Osei Twum Barima drops debut Journey to the Unknown album

Although the early death of his father presented a painful and potentially overwhelming turning point in his life, Belgium-based Ghanaian folklore artiste, Nana Osei Twum Barima, did not allow the tragedy to define or consume him.

Instead, he channelled the experience into creativity, transforming his grief and life changes into music that tells a story of survival and emotional strength.

The experience and life journey shaped his debut album, A Journey to the Unknown, a deeply reflective body of work shaped by personal struggle, resilience, and growth.

Released under the Zephyrus label and available in vinyl, CD, and digital formats, the album draws heavily from themes of culture, spirituality, family, and lived realities.

Songs on the album are Question to My Ancestors, Until When, and Belgium and Rain, Nipa, Moni and Odo.

According to Nana Osei Twum Barima, the project represents a journey through hardship and healing, beginning with the loss of his father at a young age and the unexpected life transitions that followed.

He explained that rather than being broken by the experience, he chose to process it through music. “Journey to the Unknown is a deeply personal album that tells my life story through music.

“I had to step into a new life and environment without knowing what awaited me, but every experience shaped who I have become,” he told Graphic Showbiz on Monday, June 8.

Across the project, he reflects on emotional highs and lows, including grief, displacement, and struggle, as well as moments of love, support, and faith that sustained him along the way.

The album features collaborations with Nicolas Mortelmans, Kaito Winse, Lara Rosseel, Roland Van Campenhout, and his uncle Osei Korankye, who took care of him after his father’s demise and nurtured his music talent.

Songs such as Question to My Ancestors, Until When, and Belgium and Rain explore identity, environmental concerns, and survival, while also paying tribute to family and heritage.

Through the album, he hopes listeners will find strength in their own struggles and appreciate the power of embracing life's uncertainties.
