Stacy rises from grass to grace

Of all the circumstances in life, the most challenging is being an orphan. Some will be discouraged in pursuing their dream because of their circumstance, others take a bold step to make life worth living. This is the story of model/dancer , Stacy Amewoyi Bekoe.

Currently living in the USA but born in Ghana, the CEO of New York Fashion Boutique, with branches in New Jersey and Ghana told Showbiz in an interview last week that although she became orphaned at an early age, she never gave up her dreams.

“It was not easy growing up as an orphan because my father died before I was born and my mother also passed away  while I was still young but I never gave up my dreams.

I was able to make it in life due to perseverance and hard work and by the grace of God,” she said.

“There were times I had to sleep under the Kaneshie Overhead Bridge and eat only Gari and water for the entire day. I also sold kerosene, rubber bags just to earn enough to pay my fees and further my education. Although I tried everything I could, I was unable to attend senior high school due to financial constraints but that did not stop me from getting to where I am today,’’ she said.

Still determined to pursue her dream of modelling, Stacy participated in the Miss Out Of Gold Ghana pageant in 2001, held at the Gold Hotel in Odorkor in Accra where she emerged winner and was appointed as the brand ambassador of the hotel.

Asked what inspired her to be a model, Stacy said that she was inspired by her own ability. “ I became my own source of motivation when I took that bold discussion to take part in the Miss Out Of Gold beauty pageant in 2001. Initially, it seemed impossible but I just wanted to try something new to bring out the best in me and encourage others in similar circumstances that they can still make it in life regardless of the challenges they may face”, she said.

In her bid to empower others like her, Stacy founded a beauty palour known as Stacy Beauty Palace in Bubuashie to provide free training to young ladies in hairdressing and makeup artistry as well as give them start-up capital to start their own business.

She also said that as part of her efforts at giving back to the society, she came out with a charity project called the Stacy Foundation.

“The Stacy Foundation which I started 16 years ago organises yearly donations to orphans and widows which to me is a way of giving back to the society and that is what I believe God called me to do.’’

Currently working as an Officer for Command Security Corporation at FEDEX, at the Newark International Airport, USA, Stacy said that her next plan of action is to expand her dreams.

“ My next plan as a model is to come out with a fashion magazine, set up a dancing school in Ghana because I love dancing and also to continue my humanitarian projects.’’

“My advice to the youth is to look up to God as their source of hope, abstain from bad influence and drugs. Never forget the fact that you are wonderfully made and don’t let your current situations or anyone lead you astray,’’ she said.

As a result of her selfless contribution towards the betterment of the lives of people in society, she is also set to receive a Global Role Model award on Thursday, June 30, at the Ghana College of Surgeons and Physician. The award is being presented by the Global Dream Foundation’s 10th anniversary committee.
