The dilemma of celebrity politician

THE long-held perception that celebrities are expected to be unifiers have for a long time pushed many of them away from getting involved in politics.

So the few who have been bold to defy this “unofficial status quo” have had to face the wrath of their fans who share differing political opinions.

Notable among such “victims” has been actor/comedian, Clement Bonney, popularly known as Mr Beautiful, who disclosed that he was shunned by movie producers because he declared his support for then-President John Mahama in the 2012 general election.

At the time, Mr Beautiful was one of the ‘darling boys’ of Kumawood movie producers, however, he was dropped like a lump of hot coal following his endorsement and support for the then-ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The movie producers had an explanation and it was that their patrons boycotted movies featuring Mr Beautiful because of his political leaning. Interesting right?

Well, this has been the fate of many more celebrities who have taken the bold step to join politics and be part of the decision-making body that affects their well-being and progress.

But the fans, do they understand this?

With the heat building up for this year’s general election in December, actor Prince David Osei, who is campaigning for the ruling  New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its presidential candidate Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, is equally facing the wrath of some fans for endorsing a political party they do not support.

Over the years, while professionals from various sectors have become increasingly involved in politics, Ghanaian celebrities have remained noticeably silent due to the opinion of their unique position as unifying figures, bringing people together across political lines.

Consequently, many Ghanaian entertainers and sports personalities hesitate to publicly declare their political affiliations, because doing so may polarise their fan base and jeopardise their broad appeal.

Civic duty

In a recent interview with the Daily Graphic, Prince David urged his colleagues celebrities to break this silence. The actor is stirring them up to embrace their civic duty and participate actively in the decision-making process of the country.

“There’s the need for active participation in politics, remaining vocal in our political beliefs, voicing our concerns and holding leaders accountable for their actions.

“It is inspiring to see that our voices are heard and that positive changes are being made for the benefit of all. I will continue to speak up and work towards a better future for our country and people,” he said.

While Prince David's call to action is crucial since by leveraging their influence, celebrities help raise awareness of critical issues, inspire fans to take action and hold leaders accountable.

However, the understanding of this seems far away from their teeming fans with diverse political backgrounds who are quick to pounce on their favourite celebrities who support their “political enemies”.

In a social media post recently, media personality, Kofi Okyere Darko, popularly known as KOD, who was certainly frustrated by the bashing he is receiving for supporting the opposition NDC lashed out at his critics.

He wrote on Facebook, “Some people will get distant as “FRIENDS” because you have chosen a side to support politically. Meanwhile, you stayed their friends when they made their political choice.

“At my age, you want to determine my views and beliefs? Eeeeish! You no dey respect like that?

“Even my family members have different political views, so really…”

Dilemma

This harsh treatment and cyberbullying of celebrities who engage in politics have forced many to stay out, making this civic role by celebrities low in our part of the world for the fear that they (celebrities) will lose favour with their fans and supporters due to political differences.

But the reality is that politics equally affects the entertainment and sports industries. Policies relating to funding, censorship, harassment, mental health and intellectual property directly impact these industries.

By engaging in politics, celebrities can help push agendas of interest to them so that decisions can be made to support their endeavours.

The world is facing many big problems like poverty, climate change and inequality. To solve these problems, we need new ideas and new leaders. One group of people who could help make a difference is celebrities.

If they get involved in politics, they could bring fresh perspectives and help create positive change since they possess a unique combination of qualities that make them well-suited for politics.

They have built-in platforms, allowing them to reach vast audiences and mobilise support for their causes, with their charisma and communication skills being enablers connecting them with people from diverse backgrounds.

Of course, there are concerns about celebrities' lack of political experience and potential naivety. Some critics even argue that they get in to fill their stomachs.

However, many have already demonstrated their commitment to social causes through philanthropy and activism.

So, let's encourage more celebrities to take the leap into politics and harness their star power for the greater good and not be a question of “How dare you betray us?” from fans.
