The second edition of the Zongo Heroes Awards celebrates community champions

The second edition of the Zongo Heroes Awards and Fundraising Ceremony was held on Saturday, November, 8 at the National Mosque.

The event, which kicked off at 2:00pm recognised citizens who have contributed to the development of their communities and promoted peaceful cohesion among youth in Zongo communities across Ghana.

The primary objective of the Zongo Heroes Awards was to honour individuals for their dedication to education and community development within Zongo communities. 

Today, these communities comprise people from both the lower and middle classes, originating from northern and southern Ghana, as well as immigrants from neighboring countries including Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Togo.

The self-proclaimed Mayor of Nima, Mr. Abdul Fatahu Alhassan, said the goal of the awards scheme was to celebrate local heroes and highlight initiatives for the welfare of Zongo communities. 

Speaking at the ceremony, he said; My vision for Zongo communities is to eliminate youth violence and drug abuse. I call on stakeholders, government institutions, and religious bodies to collaborate with my office in the fight against drug abuse and teenage pregnancy in the Zongos”.

Mr. Fatahu also revealed plans to establish a Zongo University to provide early training and education to Zongo youth, equipping them with the skills needed to contribute meaningfully to the country’s workforce. 

He emphasized the importance of collaboration and proactive engagement from all sectors to uplift Zongo communities.

The National Chief Imam, Dr. Ousman Nuhu Sharubutu, was the guest of honour and received an award for his contribution to peace and development. He congratulated the organisers for hosting a memorable ceremony and stressed the importance of peaceful cohesion among Zongo communities across the country. 

“Peaceful cohesion among Zongo communities is crucial, and I pray that these efforts continue to inspire development and unity”, he said.

The Chief Imam also pledged his full support to make the next edition of the Zongo Heroes Awards even more successful.

The event celebrated the achievements of local citizens, promoted community development, and highlighted the commitment of leaders like Mr. Abdul Fatahu Alhassan to addressing challenges such as youth violence, drug abuse, and limited access to education in Zongo communities.
