Today in history: Ghana becomes the first African country to give bulk Citizenship to "African Descendants of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.
Exactly six years ago, through the initiative of Ministry of the Future (MOF), a non-governmental organization, 19 people of black descent were given a “Declaration of Right to Return" on December 28, 2016.
The initiative formed part of the larger commitment of the Government of Ghana at the time to make Ghana a preferred home for African Americans and people of Black race.
The initiative was instrumental in the launch of the “Year of Return, Ghana 2019” for Africans in the Diaspora, giving fresh impetus to the quest to unite Africans on the continent with their brothers and sisters in the diaspora.

It was based on A Two Tier Reciprocal Principle, presented by MOF to the Government of Ghana.

This Historic event gained popularity across the world, enabling Ghana to capture the loving hearts and minds of the global African Diaspora.
This has undoubtedly pushed Ghana to become a preferred tourist destination for Diasporas, contributing significantly to the success of the “Year of Return”, “Beyond the Year of Return and December in GH”.

The success of the initiative has motivated other African countries such as Sierra Leone, Gabon, Tanzania, The Gambia Republic Of Benin, Liberia, Togo, Mali, Guinea Bissau, and, Senegal to also provide citizenship to people of Black descent.
It is anticipated that more African countries will emulate Ghana’s worthy cause to give proper identity to people of the Black race.
