Amazing benefits of palm kernel

Local palm kernel oil, also known as "adwengo" in vernacular, is versatile, with numerous benefits, particularly for skin and hair health.

It is known for its moisturising properties, its ability to promote hair growth, and its anti-ageing effects.

Palm kernel has various uses in food, cosmetics and construction. Palm kernel oil (PKO) is a cooking oil with health benefits, while palm kernel meal (PKM) can be used as animal feed.

Palm kernel shells (PKS) are used in construction, energy production and water purification.

Palm Kernel Oil (PKO):

PKO is cooking oil with a high smoke point, making it suitable for frying and other cooking methods.

It contains medium-chain fatty acids and vitamin K, which can be beneficial for skin health, bone health and blood clotting.

It is also a source of unsaturated fats.

PKO is used in soaps, cosmetics and skincare products due to its moisturising and nourishing properties.

Meal, shells

PKM is a by-product of palm oil processing and can be used as a component in animal feed, particularly for poultry.

When using PKM in animal feed, it is important to monitor feed intake and ensure proper nutrient ratios to avoid digestive issues.

PKS can be used as a partial replacement for traditional aggregates in concrete and asphalt, offering a sustainable construction material.

They can also be used as a fuel source for heat generation.

The shells can also be used for water purification, thermal insulation and as filler in plastic composites.

Ghana's palm oil sector is not fully self-sufficient, with imports exceeding exports.

While the country produces about 2,000,000 metric tons of oil palm fruits annually, small-scale processors account for roughly 60 per cent of the crude palm oil.

Palm kernel oil has various uses in both edible and non-edible products.

Imports, exports

In 2021, Ghana imported $289 million worth of palm oil, while exports were valued at $78.1 million, according to the United Nations in Ghana.

The PKO market was valued at US $ 50.03 billion in 2023.

The market size is estimated to grow during the forecast period.

The market is expected to reach a value of US$69.46 billion.
