Re: New national capital underway

I respond to the pronouncement of a future new capital town for Ghana by the President, Mr John Dramani Mahama.

A report in the Daily Graphic of May 20, 2025, had it that the President had alluded to the fact that the capital city of the country, Accra, was fully choked.

As a result of that, he said the government might move the national capital to Bundrase in the Ningo Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region.

The idea of a planned place for a new national capital is good. However, I want the government to consider siting the said capital either at Prang in the Bono East Region, where the Pru River empties into the Volta Lake (facing the South – Eastern portions of the Savannah Region) near Yeji, or at the confluence of the Pra and Birim rivers near Akim Oda, encompassing parts of the Eastern, Ashanti and Central regions (as per the pictures herein).

Ghana can learn from Nigeria, where the national capital was moved from Lagos (at the south-western corner of the country) to Abuja, which is within the middle portion of the country, where access by citizens from every corner of the country is possible and does not become a disadvantage due to longer distances.

The siting of the new capital in one of the proposed areas would also be a blissful experience, because it would be within easy reach of all Ghanaians.
