Tribute to Komla Dumor

I met Komla Dumor at the prime of his career, just last year. He had lots of passion, especially for his country and  the entire African continent.

The brief moment that I shared with him left me with a lot  of food for thought from the young man.

It was at a business meeting when I had just been appointed to the Board of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) where his sister, Mrs Mawuena Trebah, is the CEO .

Mawuena introduced her brother to me at the Ghana Club 100 awards night. Komla had been invited to add an  innovative touch to the night. He did a video conferencing.

Although I was a keen follower of him when he was on radio in Ghana and also watched him on BBC, I had never met him  one-on-one.

One thing that he said that struck me when we met was a promise that he made about helping to promote the GIPC internationally.

Komla said he was going to help put the GIPC on a global pedestal. He assured me that when he went back to London where he was based, he was going to use the BBC’s Focus on Africa, the programme that he hosted, to project the work of the GIPC. How happy I was that during my term of office, GIPC would be exposed on a global level such as this.

I believed in him because of the confidence with which he made the promise.

I was, therefore, shocked and saddened when I heard of his demise.

On behalf of the centre, I said a word of prayer for him and his family and wished that there would be more Ghanaians who would emulate his skills and passion in any endeavour that they found themselves in.

Ghanaians should use this century to showcase their talent globally. Komla’s work should be seen as a sacrifice to mankind and all of us should be ambassadors.

May his soul rest in perfect peace.
