Block results of indebted candidates - CHASS

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has called on the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to block the results of final-year senior high school (SHS) students who owe fees in their various schools when this year’s West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results are released.

According to CHASS, the Ghana Education Service (GES) should ensure that indebted candidates do not have access to their results until they settle their bills.

The President of CHASS, Mr Samuel Ofori-Adjei, who made the call in an interview with the Junior Graphic, said because of the directive from the Ministry of Education and the GES that all students who owed fees should not be prevented from writing the WASSCE, some students might leave school without settling their arrears because “they know that they can have access to their results online”.

Reacting to the call of CHASS, the WAEC has said it would block the results of indebted students if it received instructions from the GES to do so.

It said it was through such similar arrangements with the GES that the council was able to block the results of indebted candidates last year.

The Head of Public Affairs of WAEC, Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, told the Junior Graphic that the council was ready to act positively if the GES put in the request.

She said for the exercise to succeed, the GES, in collaboration with the heads of schools, would have to provide the names of all indebted candidates to enable  the council block their results.

Before the commencement of this year’s WASSCE, the Ministry of Education stated that “under no circumstance should any school head collect third term fees from any final year student who has already paid the second term fees”.
