Four students qualify for Triple S grand finale
Four students have qualified for the final stage of the School Sanitation Solutions Challenge (Triple S) to empower children to adopt innovative ways of minimising the increasing sanitation menace in the country.
After a keen contest to defend their essays on effective sanitation measures, Miss Naziru Mawadatu of the Damango Girls Model JHS in the Savannah Region came first with 89 points.

Miss Annabel Ankonu of the Suhum MA Experimental ‘A’ Primary placed second with 85.3 points while Miss Emmanuella Baa Darkua Vanderpuye of the John Wesley Methodist in Accra became the third winner with 82 points. Miss Gladstone Yin-Naan Nachinab of the Etoile Royale Educational Centre came fourth with 80.3 points.
Finals
Out of the 175 entries of the essay competition published in the Junior Graphic and Daily Graphic, 10 scripts were selected.
Qualified candidates met a panel of judges to defend their scripts.
The four candidates who came tops will battle it out in the grand finale which will be aired on the ‘What do you know’ show live on Ghana Television (GTV) on September 19, 2021.
The winner will be the Child Sanitation Diplomat for 2021 and will receive a laptop, tablet and a cash prize of GH¢2,500 with other consolation prizes.
Child participation
Explaining the essence of the competition, the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) for Health Technical Coordinator, World Vision International, Mr Yaw Attah Arhin, said the initiative was meant to get children involved in sanitation issues in the country.
“Over the years, World Vision International, a Christian organisation, has partnered Kings Hall Media, an advocacy and communications consultancy, to engage schoolchildren in a number of WASH programmes to ensure children take part fully in these programmes to help them contribute to national development,” he said.
He said the Triple S programmes also sought to educate children on sanitation challenges and help build their capacity to bring out innovative and sustainable solutions to address emerging sanitation and hygiene challenges.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Kings Hall Media, Mr Emmanuel Addae, encouraged the children to take keen interest in identifying development issues and create relevant solutions.
“We want children to be part of the solutions to development issues because they are the most vulnerable to preventable sanitation related diseases,” he added.
Background
The Triple S challenge was launched in 2018 for children to identify development challenges and devise strategies to solve these challenges.
The first edition, however, was rolled out in 2020 when Miss Neriah Tettey was adjudged the 2020 Child Sanitation Diplomat.
She has since been supported to embark on a number of advocacy and sensitisation campaigns against open defecation and poor sanitation.
