I want to be an engineer, but ...
Dear Auntie Betty, I want to become an engineer, but everyone says I have to be a doctor in future.
I do not know what to do. Please help me.

Dear Nana Kwame, It is good you have in mind the career path you want to follow when you grow up.
But you must know that apart from following your heart and passion, choosing a career depends on a number of factors and you have to keep them in mind as you decide what to do.
It is also important to note that as you grow, your choice may change, which is normal because our views, perceptions and sometimes skills set change as we grow.
You have to know who you are as a person — your strengths, skills, creativity, what you love doing, what makes you happy, etc. You also have to be open minded and read around a list of different careers, so that you can have ideas on a wide range of professions.
Again, do make sure you are exposed to a variety of activities and opportunities in both the sciences and the arts to know what arouses your interest or curiosity.
So when others advise you on what to do in future, listen and also let them know the reason for your choice.
It is good to listen and understand why others want you to take a particular path, but you have to make the choice yourself in the end — a choice that will be fulfilling.
It is vital for others to support and guide you on a career path, but they do not have to push you or force what they want on you.
You could also talk to a career guidance counsellor to help you make the right decision.
Since you want to be an engineer, you could ask your parents to help you get a mentor who can encourage you and help you fulfil your career aspirations.
In the meantime, you have to continue to learn more about yourself and study hard to enable you to get good grades to further your education and achieve your dreams.
Choosing the right career is not easy and you do not have to rush to make a decision; it takes time and you will definitely get to know as time goes on.
I wish you the very best.
