­Nafisa, the new marathon sensation

Nafisa Sumani, a 13-year-old pupil of the Ibrahim Islamic School in Sunyani, last Saturday surprised many residents when she won the Female Category of the Brong Ahafo Regional Millennium Marathon.

The budding athlete finished the race in 40 minutes 48 seconds to win the 10.5-kilometre distance.

Nafisatu, a Primary Six pupil, was followed closely by 25-year-old Beauty Shine Abini. 

Before the event, Rosina Titi, a more experienced athlete, was tipped as the favourite but Nafisa shocked everyone to win the race. 

Nafisa’s impressive performance enabled her to beat 399 other females who took part in the marathon which is in its second year.  

Samuel Tettra, a 22-year-old student of the Nsoatre Senior High School, won the Male Category with a time of 34 minutes and 34 seconds.

The 10.5-kilometre race started from the Sunyani Coronation Park through some principal streets of Sunyani (the VRA Road and Penkwasi Road) and ended at the Coronation Park.

The Millennium Marathon regional 10.5-kilometre race is to promote good health and peace in the nation, so the general public is always encouraged to participate.

So far, three regions have hosted the event—Northern, Upper West and Brong Ahafo.

The National Annual Millennium Marathon is scheduled for September 3, 2016 in the nation's capital, Accra.
