Students regret missing march past

Some students have described as unfortunate their inability to march at this year’s Independence Day celebration at the Independence Square in Accra.

The students, who were marched off the parade ground during the downpour which lasted for over one hour, said they had looked forward to the opportunity after rehearsing for the big day.

However, they said, they could not do anything about the situation because the rain could not be controlled.

The students made these known in separate interviews with the Junior Graphic at the Independence Square.

Following their inability to march, some of them resorted to singing and dancing to jama songs so as to keep them warm after they were drenched in the rain.

“I wish I had the opportunity to march but this did not happen. This is something you cannot do anything about,” Michael Graham of the Kinbu Senior High Technical School said.

Master Thomas Kane of the Mamobi Prisons ‘2’ Junior High School said he had longed for the opportunity to march because it was not every student who had the privilege to do so for the nation.

“This is something I had been wishing for in the past. I thought it was my time after watching it for many years on television,” he said.

Master Seth Larweh from the Accra Technical Training Centre described the downpour as a blessing to Ghanaians.

He said his school was determined to emerge as winners in this year’s march past but “now we cannot do anything about the situation.”

Master Ishmael Adotey Acquaye of the Osu Presbyterian ‘2’ JHS suggested that those who could not march should be given the opportunity again to do so.

“I know the Form Three students cannot march because they would be preparing for their examination but those in Form One can be given the opportunity again,” he suggested.
