Is red still the Valentine colour?

Red is generally assumed to symbolise warmth, passion, desire as well as love so when people wear red on Valentine’s Day, it’s not only for the colour’s sake but also for what it evokes.

Not too long ago, major towns and cities in many parts of the country were crammed with people wearing red items on Valentine’s Day.

About three out of five persons seen in the streets wore something with a touch of red: from shoes, dresses and scarfs to ties, shirts and hats.

Both men and women were bitten by the Valentine bug to rock their red.

Over the last few years, however, for a variety of reasons, many people don’t seem to fancy the wearing of red on Valentine’s Day anymore. While some feel they have outgrown it, others feel wearing red on Valentine’s Day is not necessarily an indication of what you feel within.

Magdalene, a 37-year-old banker, told The Mirror that she used to wear red on Valentine’s Day in the late 1990s when she was in the university but stopped after completion.

“You had to find something red to wear because almost everyone on campus wore something red on Valentine’s Day. Those times, you felt good wearing red but when I graduated, wearing red felt awkward so I stopped,” Magdalene said.

Bridget, a 23-year-old student on the other hand, has never worn red on Valentine’s Day though she loves to sport something red on ordinary days.

“Red is my favourite colour so whatever I wear, I make sure I add a touch of red. If it’s not my dress, then it’s my ribbon, bracelet, slippers or wristwatch but on Valentine’s Day, I try as much as possible not to wear anything red.

“It may sound strange but I don’t want to join the bandwagon of wearing red on Valentine’s Day.”

The idea of wearing red on Valentine’s Day may be dimming but there are some people who still hold this tradition dear.

Ewurama, a 28-year-old teacher, met her husband on a Valentine’s Day. She was in red high heeled shoes walking home from work when she slipped and sprained an ankle.

“This man came from nowhere and helped me home and a love story began from there. I sprained an ankle but my red shoe got me a husband and we have never observed Valentine without something red,” Ewurama said.

Valentine is a few days away and you may be debating with yourself whether to wear red or not.

In case you opt for a tight red dress, it may accidentally rip at the seams and just like Ewurama, land you something precious. You may never know!
