AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has commenced construction of a 24-unit classroom block for the Obuasi Cluster of Schools to enhance access to quality education in the municipality.
The project, described as one of the largest and most modern public basic school facilities in the country, forms part of the company’s 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP) aimed at improving educational infrastructure in its host communities.
At a sod-cutting ceremony, the Community Relations Manager of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Edmund Oduro Agyei, said the project was in line with the mine’s purpose of “mining to empower people and advance societies.”
He said the facility would help address infrastructural challenges within the basic education sector by providing a safe and conducive learning environment.
The two-storey classroom block will include four sick bays, two head teachers’ offices, two additional offices, two large staff common rooms, two kitchenettes, an ICT laboratory, a library, an assembly hall, a cafeteria, and washrooms with 24 toilet facilities.
The Obuasi Municipal Director of Education, George Alfred Koomson, commended AngloGold Ashanti for its continued investment in education, noting that its interventions had significantly improved teaching and learning in the area.
"We have witnessed a remarkable improvement in education in Obuasi, thanks to the invaluable contributions of AngloGold Ashanti. This 24-unit classroom block further demonstrates its unwavering dedication to providing a conducive environment for effective teaching and learning,” he said.
Two Obuasi-based firms, Kilon Company Limited and Erok Ghana Limited, have been awarded the contract to execute the project within 16 months.
