Philanthropist hands over library to St Matthew Roman Catholic School

A philanthropist, Ophelia Opoku Mensah, in partnership with the St George's Library Fund, has inaugurated and handed over a well-furnished library to the St Matthew Roman Catholic School in Effiduase in the Konongo-Mampong Diocese of the Catholic Church.

The library was in memory of Madam Felicia Kusi-Mensah, an educator and counsellor from the Oyoko family from Effiduase in Sekyere East District in the Ashanti Region.

The library was the third to be built by the funds since its establishment in 2011. The first two were built for the Kweiman Presby School and Amrahia Basic School, both in the Greater Accra Region.

Objective

At a handing over ceremony, which was attended by the Bishop of the Diocese, Most Rev. John Opoku Agyeman, Ms Mensah said the objective of building the library was to instil and inculcate in the children the habit of reading, and skill training to the members of the community.

She said the library would also serve as a learning ground to provide classes for illiterate adults and school dropouts.

Ms Mensah said the fund was established to give Ghanaian students access to books to enable them to read about their careers and personal knowledge.

“With the support of the community and the local district assemblies, we aim to provide the children with colourful safe reading environments manned by caring professionals,” she said.

She was hopeful that the books would help to enlarge the world, the children and all who read them.

Ms Mensah expressed her appreciation to all those who assisted in building the library for the community at Effiduase, particularly the Knights and Ladies of Marshall, Council 10 and Court 5, for the donation of the books, Ms Dela Owusu for donating school bags and her husband, Sir Charles Adjei, for the support.

Also in attendance were some members of the Noble Order of the Knights and Ladies of Marshall.
