The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Philip Duku Osei, announced this at the maiden matriculation of students of the university at Wa last Saturday.
Hitherto, the university was known as the Wa Campus of the University of Development Studies (UDS ).
Freshers
A total of 2,368 students accepted admissions to the SDD-UBIDS of which 817 of them, constituting 35 per cent, are females. The figure represents 154 postgraduate students and 2,214 undergraduate students.
Prof. Osei said the figures were the number of students who confirmed their admission out of the 5,412 students who the institution offered admission. This was out of the 9,000 application forms which were sold out.
Oath
Prof. Osei, therefore, charged the students to be conscious of the trust reposed in them by their parents and guardians to become useful citizens for the society, cautioning them to be disciplined and make good use of their stay on campus.
He reminded them that "the oath you will be taking today is to be obedient to all those in authority and to be of good conduct throughout your stay in the university.”

Conducive environment
Prof. Osei mentioned that although the university had some infrastructural challenges, “management remains on course to pursue the President's promise to bring on board more projects and resources to make this university a befitting place for effective teaching and learning.”
He informed them that all their halls of residence had been refurbished to accommodate them comfortably and further explained that students could contact the Office of Students Accommodation, which had now been placed under the Office of the Dean of Students for information on available hostels should they require them.
