1972 SWESCO old students inaugurate green project for alma mater

The 1972 past students of the Swedru Senior High School (SWESCO) have inaugurated a greening project that will see the planting of more than 5,000 trees to beautify the environment of their alma mater.

The year group, as part of its contributions to the growth and development of their former school, have resolved to plant trees in phases to add aesthetic value to the school to enhance teaching and learning.

An important part of the project is that, the trees include economic ones which, when fully matured, can be felled and sold to generate income locally to support the school’s activities.

Speaking in an interview with the Daily Graphic after planting some of the trees to kick-start the project, the leader of the year group, Mr Kwame Gyeke-Amoako, said the move by the year group was in line with the government's Green Ghana project to increase the nation’s forest cover.

He stated that the group, after leaving the school many years ago, thought it wise to come back to help improve the environment in their former school for the benefit of the current and future students.

Mr Gyeke-Amoako noted that as old students, they would continue to contribute their widow’s mite towards the transformation of the school, stressing, “as past students, we are duty-bound to play a pivotal role towards addressing the challenges of the school”.

Improve school’s image

“As a group, we will put in place a comprehensive plan together with management of the institution to ensure that the trees planted, survive towards achieving the intended objective,” Mr Gyeke-Amoako said.

Another member of the group, Mr Ebenezer Haizel, said the project intended to maintain the green environment and improve the image of the school as well, saying, “under the auspices of the national old students association, we will ensure that the project is successful in the school”.

The headmistress of the school, Ms Golda Esi Andam, lauded the 1972-year group and all other past students for their continuous support towards the progress of the school, saying, “the contributions of the old students over the years have been a game changer for the school in its quest to provide quality education to students.
