110-year-old woman killed by fire in a house (photos)

A fire incident that hit an eight-bedroom house at Kronom Abuohia near Kumasi on Sunday claimed the life of a 110-year-old woman, destroying property running into thousands of Ghana cedis.

Remains of the deceased, Eno Akua Addai, have been deposited at the morgue at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

Narrating the story to Graphiconline, the owner of the house, Agya Atta Kwasi Badu popularly known as Agya Atta, said it happened at 7pm on Sunday after a heavy downpour.

He said there was power outage when a nearby resident who was passing by saw that parts of the house where the deceased was sleeping had caught fire and woke them up to fight the fire.

He said he was in his room with his wife, Afua Fofie and their five children and upon hearing the alarm, they quickly rushed out of their rooms and called on others to join them fight the fire.

Unfortunately, he said, the fire spread from the starting point and grew in intensity, 

He said the old lady was badly burnt before personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) got to the scene with a fire tender.

He said she was rushed to KATH where she was declared dead.

Items destroyed

Agya Atta said, his wife was a trader and dealt in second-hand clothes and that prior to the fire outbreak, she had three different bails, one of which costs GH¢2,800, but all of which have been burnt to ashes.

He said as an Elder of the Abuohia New Site SDA Church and for lack of space for the new church, he had provided one room in his house to keep church property, all of which has also turned into ashes.

The church property were one Amplifier, four speakers, 40 plastic chairs, four microphones, curtains, among others which run into thousands of Ghana cedis.

In a state of hopelessness and losing count at his destroyed items, he appealed to the public to support his family.

The taxi driver, Nana Yeboah who was treated for burns in a clinic

In a related development, a taxi driver, Nana Yeboah, 38, who is also a resident of the Abuohia New Site lost his vehicle with registration number GW 1712 S to a fire outbreak.

As of the time of filing this report, he had been treated and discharged from a clinic.
