The conference is scheduled to take place in Accra from September 14 to 16 2015, at the Accra International Conference Centre, Ghana.

Donations

The acting Secretary-General of the Ghana Commission for UNESCO, Mr Riche-Mike Wellington, who received the donations on behalf of the Chairperson of the Ghana Commission for UNESCO, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, said the conference and exhibition would provide a platform for companies in the area of photonics and optical technologies to showcase and explain how those technologies were providing cutting-edge solutions in education, communication, energy and health.

He further explained that the conference and exhibition, among other things, was expected to create awareness of the potential of light and light-based technologies in solving many of the development challenges facing the African continent.

Besides, Mr Wellington said, the event would also promote interaction and dialogue among academics, industries and professionals in using optics and photonics concepts in tapping developmental strategies for communities.

That, he said, would enable policy-makers to appreciate the relevance for the support of science for economic advancement and added that it would further attract innovators to come out with new ideas and inventions.

Objectives

Outlining some priorities of the country during the International Year of Light celebrations, he mentioned the upgrading of the Laser and Fibre Optics Centre at the University of Cape Coast into a fully-fledged institute for capacity building in fibre optics technology.

He also mentioned the establishment of a sub-regional Laser Medical Application Laboratory (LMAL) to train medical practitioners to make use of the relevant laser technologies in the field of urology, ophthalmology, dentistry and general surgery.

Mr Wellington said UNESCO would also establish a Solar Technology Research Centre to enhance the study and promotion of solar science and the use of alternative energy as well as the establishment of a Museum of Light and Light-based Technologies as part of solutions to the post-2015 United Nations development agenda.

He, therefore, called on corporate Ghana to partner with the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Commission for UNESCO for the realisation of the stated outcomes.
