500 People supported to register with NHIS

About 500 people from the deprived community of Nkramom and its environs on the outskirts of Techiman have benefited from free National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registration through the initiative of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Graduates Association.

The exercise, which cost over GH¢4,000, was part of the social responsibility of the IDB graduates, beneficiaries of IDB scholarships who are determined to give something back to society after their education.

In the past few years, the IDB graduates have undertaken medical outreach programmes and provided wells in some deprived communities in various parts of the country.

Last year, the association selected Nkramom as the place to implement one of its social projects, and as part of its end-of-year activities, it arranged with the Techiman Municipal Office of the NHIS to bring hope to residents of the community.

The exercise attracted a large number of people from other communities such as Krobo, Akrotuom and Arowa.

Even though the initiative was from IDB graduates, who are mainly Muslims, it was not restricted to only Muslims, as many Christians from some of the communities took advantage to register.

The Manager of the Techiman NHIS, Mr Augustine Appau, expressed satisfaction with the response of the people and called on other organisations to embark on similar exercises to bring hope to people who, otherwise, would find it difficult to register with the NHIS.

The three IDB graduates who were selected by the association to supervise the exercise on its behalf were a Tema-based engineer and treasurer of the association, Mr Jibril Afolabi; another engineer from Accra, Mr Suleiman Abubakar Sidiq, and Dr Adam Gyedu of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

The Imam of Nkramom, Alhaji Salifu Takyia, who could not hide his happiness at the conduct of the exercise, prayed for the organisers of the exercise and expressed the hope that they would return to support the deprived community in another way.
