Some of the occupants of the vehicles were injured.

The accident caused heavy vehicular traffic on the Graphic-Obetsebi-Lamptey Circle road.

Fortunately, the police were on hand to direct traffic, while they made efforts to tow the accident vehicles away.

Eyewitness account

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the driver of the truck, Mr Charles Morrison, said he was on his way to Kaneshie from Tema.

He said when he got to the top of the overpass, the brakes of the truck failed, explaining that he tried to deal with the situation but to no avail.

“We were in traffic and when we had to move, the brakes failed as I was descending. I tried to move the car onto the pavement but it did not work and so I bumped into the vehicle in front of me and then the vehicles kept hitting one another,” he said.

Mr Morrison stated that even though he was aware that heavy trucks were supposed to pass beneath the overpass and not on top of it, he did not foresee such a disaster because he had climbed some hills without incident before he got to the overpass on the Graphic Road.

The driver of a Toyota Avensis which was also involved in the accident, Mr Sylvester Williams, said he was in traffic waiting to move, only to hear a vehicle hit the back of his car.

“I saw some pedestrians running from the pavement and felt a heavy thud at the back of my car. I had no idea about what had happened because my focus was on the road ahead,” he said.

A passenger on board an Urvan bus that was also involved in the accident said the passengers did not know what to do when they realised what was happening and so they started shouting for help.

“We started shouting and screaming when we saw the development that was taking place. Some of us even jumped out of the vehicle through the windows,” she said.
