Abofu footbridge undergoes repairs

The entire stretch of the Abofu footbridge near Achimota in Accra has received a major facelift. The bridge got damaged when an overloaded articulated truck hit its middle portion, resulting in cracks in its frame.

Even before then, its metal railings had become rusted and weak, with the iron rods used in constructing the floor of the bridge becoming exposed.

On a recent visit by the Daily Graphic to Abofu to find out the current state of the bridge, it was discovered that all the floor tiles that were damaged had been replaced, while the broken portions of the bridge had been repaired and reinforced.

It was noticed, however, that a large crack running beneath the bridge was still there, arousing fear that it could get subsequently worse and endanger the lives of pedestrians if it was not repaired.

That notwithstanding, all the metal railings had been sprayed and loosening bolts replaced with new ones.

In addition, the filth that had accumulated on the footbridge had been cleared, giving it a new look.

However, the median strip on the road leading to and after the bridge was overgrown with weeds.

Ms Dorothy Akwetey, a food vendor at Abofu who lives close to the bridge, told the paper that she was now relieved after the repair works on the bridge which she said was user friendly and safe.

"We now feel a sense of belonging and wish that all major footbridges in the city that need repairs would be attended to in order that the increasing rate of vehicles knocking down pedestrians on the N1 will reduce,” she said.

Yaw Aboagye, a sprayer, was full of praise for the city authorities for coming to their aid by repairing the footbridge.

According to him, the repair works had made the bridge even accessible at night.
