Organised by the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) in collaboration with VIVO Energy, distributors of Shell branded products, the exercise was aimed at evaluating and addressing potential health risks associated with the activities of the drivers.

The drivers were screened for blood pressure, hypertension and blood sugar level and were also sensitised to road safety management.
Prior to the exercise in Accra last Thursday, the Executive Director of NRSC, Mrs May Obiri-Yeboah, said the purpose of the health screening was for early diagnosis and treatment of the drivers in order to prevent any form of road accidents.

Mrs Obiri-Yeboah called on transport unions to institute regular medical screening for their members to ensure that healthy drivers were on the roads.

She also appealed to car owners to not put undue pressure on drivers in meeting their daily sales which could sometimes result in drivers getting high blood pressure in the attempt to meet demands.

Safety Day 2015

In a speech read on his behalf, the Managing Director of VIVO Energy, Mr Ebenezer Faulkner, said the health screening and sensitisation exercise formed part of events to mark the company’s Safety Day 2015.

Speaking on the theme, “Safety Leadership starts here”, he said it was about developing a culture where the values of safety were embedded at every level, encouraging employers, contractors and drivers to adopt good road safety behaviours.

Mr Faulkner said the company was committed to ensuring that its employees adhered to all road safety regulations.
“Safety is not just the responsibility of all but it is also about everyone taking personal action,” he added.

Car owners

The Head of Education Research and Training at the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Alexander Obeng, called on car owners to ensure that they provided authentic roadworthy stickers for their cars.

By doing so, he said, they would be seeking the welfare of the drivers by seeing to it that they were not found wanting with fake roadworthy stickers.
