According to her, very often contributions of women in the informal sector, especially market women, farmers, traders among others were overlooked whiles that of fellow women in the corporate world were recognised.

Madam Djan said this when she addressed the first-ever National Women’s Summit, organised by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGSCP) in Accra on Monday.

The summit formed part of activities to observe this year’s International Women’s Day, which will be celebrated on March 8 on the local theme: “Equality For Women is Progress For All Through Total Inclusion”.

The international theme for the celebration is, “Equality For Women Is Progress For All”.

The president of the Market Women Association said most often, people in the informal sector were invited to official ceremonies to fill empty seats and that the time had come  to see their worth; hear their voice and contribution to national development.

Delivering a homily, Mrs Gifty Afenyi Dadzie, President of AGLOW International, Ghana, called on women to brighten the corner wherever they found themselves.

She said women must not to see themselves as playing second fiddle to men but rather as people who could do all things that they set themselves to do.

The Minister of Gender Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur, said women today are determined to stand together as one to consolidate and improve on what had been achieved by their forefathers.

She called on all to sustain efforts to ensure that gender equality for women became an integral part of national development.

She recognised and commended roles played by parliamentarians in passing laws to protect women as well as the judiciary which had delivered landmark judgements in favour of women in relation to property and other rights.

Nana Lithur said the journey to gender equality might be arduous and rough but added that there was light at the end of the tunnel.
