Affordable Type 2 diabetes drug launched in Accra

A new affordable and effective drug to help manage Type 2 diabetes in Ghana has been introduced in the country.

Introduced by the Panacea Pharmaceuticals Limited, in partnership with Vega UK Limited, the drug, GLIKIT, comes at a time when approximately eight per cent of adults in Ghana are currently affected by Type 2 diabetes, making the need for accessible treatment increasingly critical.

The introduction of this new medication aims to provide relief to thousands of Ghanaians by ensuring they have access to affordable, high-quality treatment options.

A consultant physician and endocrinologist, Professor Ernest Yorke, who launched the medication, urged the government to prioritise aid for individuals with diabetes because, according to him, many patients are struggling financially to access the necessary medications and care.

“Managing diabetes can be an overwhelming financial burden and for many, this new medication represents a glimmer of hope but it is essential that our government steps in to support these patients as the right resources and support can greatly improve the lives of those affected by diabetes.”

The Sales and Marketing Manager at Panacea Pharmaceuticals, Dr Nana Yaw Ampiah Amoah, said the company’s partnership with its UK counterpart, Vega UK, has enabled them to bring GLIKIT to the market at an affordable price for Ghanaians.

He encouraged all Ghanaians and healthcare professionals to consider GLIKIT for diabetes treatment.

“Our partnership with Vega UK has made it possible to provide a solution that can relieve the financial burden on patients and their families.
