AMA and Nesstra Ghana to paint Accra

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in partnership with the Nesstra Ghana Limited, has launched a project to paint some selected streets, public facilities and structures within the national capital.

Nesstra, as part of its contribution, is providing GH¢150,000 worth of its premium brand, Suvinil, for the exercise.

The project, dubbed: “Accra for Arts Initiative”, is aimed at beautifying the city of Accra.

Launch

At the launch of the project in Accra last Thursday, the Chief Executive of the AMA, Mr Mohammed Adjei Sowah, said one of the priority areas of the assembly was to beautify and brand Accra.

Mr Sowah said in branding Accra, the assembly would heavily rely on the creative arts professionals to execute the initiative.

"I believe that in making Accra beautiful, our best allies are friends in the creative industry," he said.

Posters

He cautioned that the assembly would not tolerate the unregulated posting of posters that defaced public facilities in the metropolis.

"We will make sure that the posters are not just removed, but we will make those walls very beautiful to discourage people from, first of all, even thinking about posting posters on those walls," Mr sowah said.

He explained that the project would see some of the national monuments and edifices, along with some principal streets of Accra, painted.

Private sector

He stressed that many countries had beautified their cities with paintings, citing Cape Town in South Africa and São Paulo in Brazil as examples.

He commended Nesstra Ghana Limited — a registered Ghanaian company that offers products and services to the building and construction firms, and the mining and power sectors — for the support towards the exercise, pointing out that the initiative would encourage other metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) to follow suit.

He also commended the various artists groups in the region for their various initiatives towards beautifying the city.

The event was attended by representatives from the various artists groups in the region, including Ghana Graffiti and Painting In The Open.

Support

The Marketing and Communication Manager of Nesstra Ghana Limited, Mr Nana Yaw Ampem-Darko Antwi, said the company had been working hand-in-hand with the various relevant stakeholders to develop the country.

"We believe in this national agenda and efforts being made by the AMA to beautify the capital city of Ghana," he said, stressing that Nesstra was supporting the initiative as part of its corporate social responsibility.

He said the support would also strengthen and promote arts programmes in Accra and across the entire country and make Ghana a healthy and presentable destination for tourism.
