According to the Chief Executive Officer of the assembly, Dr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, the councillors should not only prevent but must report such practices to the appropriate officers at the assembly for redress.

Act

The inauguration of the sub-metropolitan district councils is in accordance with the Local Government  (Accra Metropolitan Assembly ) established instrument, 2008 LI 1926 which allows the President of the Republic, through the Greater Accra Regional Minister, to appoint councillors for the various sub-metros of the assembly.

They are  Ablekuma  Central, Ablekuma North, Ablekuma  South and Ashiedu Keteke. The rest are Ayawaso Central,  Ayawaso  West, Ayawaso East, La, Okaikoi North, Okaikoi South and Osu Klottey sub-metro.

The councillors are responsible for the day-to-day administration of their various areas, promotion and safeguarding public health and assigning of officers to communities in their respective areas.

Their duties also includes overseeing  the effective operations of public places of convenience and ensuring the payment of levies by the assembly.

Support

Dr Vanderpuije said the councillors were taking office at a time when the assembly needed their support to push forward issues pertaining to sanitation and environmental management, development control, education, security, health and revenue mobilisation.

He said the assembly has also initiated projects and programmes on storm-water drains, solid and liquid waste management, public health and the development of markets.

Dr Vanderpuije said the projects which were expected to commence in June, were not only going to transform the landscape of the city of the national capital, but would also contribute to the economic vibrancy of the city when they were completed.

“Your duty is to monitor these projects and ensure that they are completed on time for the benefit of the people”, he said.

Dr Vanderpuije further indicated that, as councillors, they were also ambassadors of the assembly and, therefore, were expected to carry themselves in a manner that would uphold the image of the assembly.

Appointment

The Presiding Member of the AMA, Thomas Ashong, said their appointment as councillors was a privilege, as such the President could equally revoke their appointments, if they failed to live up to expectation.
