Assembly prosecutes landlords for failing to construct toilets

The Madina Magistrate Court presided over by Her Worship Pricilla Dapaah Mireku, on Wednesday May 11, 2016 sentenced Baffour Appau, a landlord at Ocansey, a suburb of Madina, to a fine of 25 penalty units (GH¢300) or in default two months’ imprisonment for failing to construct a toilet in his house.

He was also ordered by the court to construct an approved toilet facility on or before May 31, 2016. 

The accused was found guilty of non-compliance with notice which attracted 10 penalty units, and for failure to construct  a toilet, which attracted 15 penalty units. 

Both fines are to run concurrently. The case was adjourned to June 1, 2016.

Bail

Two other accused persons pleaded not guilty and were granted bail in the sum of GH¢300 with one surety. 

Bench warrants were issued for the arrest of three other persons who were absent.

Prosecuting, Mr Lambert Kwara of the Environmental Health Department told the court that the accused persons were served notices to construct household toilets in accordance with the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly’s (LANMMA’s) bye-laws but they failed to comply. 

Subsequently, they were charged to appear before the court.

The six landlords were prosecuted by the assembly for failing to construct household toilets for their tenants.
