Assembly worried about temporary structures in municipality

The La Nkwantanang Madina Municipal Assembly in the Greater Accra Region has given a signal of its determination to rid the municipality of temporary structures.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Franklin Anku, who mentioned this at the first general assembly session of the municipality at Madina, expressed worry at the rate at which such structures were springing up in the municipality and described it as alarming.

Addressing members of the assembly, the MCE said, “if we do not take pragmatic steps to control the rate at which kiosks are springing up, our municipality will one day be like the popular Sodom and Gomorrah.”

Development control

Mr Anku expressed concern over the haphazard manner in which permanent structures were being put up in the municipality, which is not in conformity with the master layout of the municipality.

He said there were instances where reports reached him that people were building on access roads, contrary to building regulations.

“What is even worrying is building on watercourses; the long run effect is that control of run-off water becomes difficult, which eventually leads to flooding,” he lamented.

Mr Anku, therefore, charged officials of the municipality whose line of duty was directly linked to development and planning  to ensure that there was no development along watercourses in the municipality.

He directed that all structures on watercourses should be removed to prevent disasters in the municipality.

BECE

Touching on the performance of the municipality in the last Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for 2013, Mr Anku said it was not the best, stressing that “this is an indication that something is wrong.”

Mr Anku added that there was the need for the assembly to find out the cause for such an abysmal performance and identify strategies to make the situation better.

Legal backing

Mr Anku said in order to get legal backing for the assembly to carry out its daily activities, its legal officer had gone through the draft of the assembly bye-laws and copies had also been given to members for their inputs.

He, therefore, sought approval from members of the assembly for the drafted bye-laws to be sent to the Ghana Publishing Corporation for gazetting.
