Ban on weapons, motorbike riding and war regalia as Sawla-Tuna-Kalba curfew extended

The government has renewed the curfew imposed on the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba Township and its surrounding communities in the Savannah Region.

A statement issued on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, said the curfew will run daily from 8pm to 5am. The decision, taken on the advice of the Regional Security Council and effected through Executive Instrument, is aimed at preserving peace and security in the area.

The Ministry urged chiefs, opinion leaders, the youth, and residents to exercise restraint and to seek non-violent ways of addressing disputes. “Government continues to urge Chiefs, Opinion Leaders, Youth, and People of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them and to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace in the area,” the statement read.

The renewal also comes with strict security directives. These include a total ban on the possession or carrying of firearms, ammunition, or offensive weapons, with offenders facing arrest and prosecution. In addition, no two or more persons are permitted to ride together on motorbikes during the day, and the wearing of war regalia has also been prohibited.

Authorities say the restrictions are necessary to forestall further unrest and maintain calm, as security agencies continue to monitor the situation in the district.
