Bawjiase: Suspected robber who attempted to attack police with sharpened cutlass gunned down
A suspected robber who reportedly attempted to attack the police with a sharpened cutlass at Bawjiase in the Central Region has been gunned down, Graphic Online has gathered.
The suspect, identified as Clement Kofi Aidoo, a.k.a Yaw or Paddy, was said to have been shot and killed when he attempted to attack police personnel who had been detailed to arrest him, together with other suspects, at Danso near Bawjiase in the Central Region.
The suspect and his accomplices are said to have stolen a Toyota Hilux pickup and other items at Labone in Accra and had gone into hiding in the Bawjiase area.
The police have since retrieved the Toyota Hilux pickup with registration number GW 9834-25, together with several documents, the complainant’s mobile phone, as well as a Voter’s ID card and a Police ID card belonging to a policeman.
A police situational report (SITREP) seen by Graphic Online indicated that on January 30, 2026, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohunu, referred a petition filed by one Madam Christiana Frimpong, aged 77, to the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit (AARU) of the CID Headquarters for investigation.
The complainant reported that on December 4, 2025, she was attacked in her room at Labone in Accra by armed men who tied her hands and legs, covered her face with a plastic bag, and robbed her of a Toyota Hilux pickup with registration number GW 9834-25, an iPhone 16 Pro Max, and other personal effects.
On February 6, 2026, at about 1:30 a.m., a team of investigators proceeded to Danso near Bawjiase in the Awutu Senya District following investigations.
"After four days of sustained intelligence gathering, the team located suspects identified as Clement Kofi Aidoo, also known as Yaw or Paddy, and Joseph Abequaye.
According to the SITREP, "upon sighting the police, the suspect jumped through a window, wielding a sharp cutlass, and attempted to attack the officers. He was shot and critically injured in the process. The suspect was rushed to the Police Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead by the medical officer on duty while receiving care. His body was later deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy," the SITREP indicated.
During the operation, the police retrieved the Toyota Hilux pickup (GW 9834-25), several documents, the complainant’s mobile phone, as well as a Voter’s ID card and Police ID card bearing the name of a policeman, all of which have been retained as exhibits for ongoing investigations.
According to the police, further investigations led to the invitation of the policeman whose police ID and voter ID cards were retrieved.
That policeman is said to be stationed at the Kaneshie Divisional Headquarters and when he was questioned, he explained that in November 2025, while seeking a house help for his ailing father, he came into contact with the suspect through a recruitment agency at Bubuashie.
"According to him, the suspect commenced work at his residence at Kaneshie on November 1, 2025. However, on November 14, 2025, while assisting his father to receive medical attention at the Ridge Hospital, the suspect allegedly fled with his Toyota Camry saloon car with registration number GC 123-12, police and voter ID cards, cash sum of GH¢12,200 and other personal effects."
The matter, it said was reported to the Kaneshie Police Station, where investigations revealed that the suspect was a native of Bontroase in the Central Region and that his real name was Joseph Obessi, also known as Paddy.
It said on January 25, 2026, the suspect was reportedly spotted with the stolen Toyota Camry at Bontroase. "After a hot pursuit by police, he abandoned the vehicle at Kojo Acquah Village and fled."
