The programme is aimed at maximising the productivity of teachers and nurses in rural Ghana by giving them cost-effective and sustainable means of transport.

It is also to motivate and encourage teachers and health workers to work in hard to reach areas.

Mr Gershon Adeklo, Better Ghana Motorcycle Programme Coordinator told newsmen that the programme provides a compelling case for building economic value for teachers by supplying them with motorbikes, its parts and tools as well as basic maintenance and repair works.

He noted that public transportation in the country has become disjointed, making it less desirable and convenient for teachers and health workers in rural areas hence the initiative.

Mr Adeklo said in addition to mending the gaps within the transportation system for teachers and health workers, the programme would promote a shift in the travelling preferences of teachers and health workers and ultimately address other issues in communities where they live.

He said riding motorcycle is four times faster than walking and said the programme would lift people out of poverty.

Mr Adeklo said about 30,000 teachers and health workers are expected to benefit from the programme by the close of next year.

He said beneficiaries would pay by monthly deductions of GH₵ 155 from their salaries through the Controller and Accountant General Department for a period of 24 months.
