The student, identified as Emmanuel Bawa, passed out after falling and foaming.

Unconfirmed reports had it that Bawa was suffering from epilepsy.

The police told the Daily Graphic that Bawa was with his mates in the boys’ dormitory while morning assembly was going on when they spotted the senior housemaster of the school passing by their dormitory.

They indicated that the students, sensing that they might be seen by the senior housemaster, started running away but unfortunately Bawa tripped and fell.

The police further told the Daily Graphic that the senior housemaster (whose name has been withheld for security reasons) rushed Bawa first to the school's infirmary for first aid and later to the Bolgatanga Hospital, where the boy died on arrival.

They stated that as a result of Bawa’s death, some of the students started hurling stones at some of the teachers of the school, while other students reportedly vandalised a vehicle and a shop belonging to the senior housemaster and his wife.

Senior housemaster’s reaction

When contacted, the senior housemaster denied chasing students leading to Bawa’s death.

He explained that the school usually locked the various dormitories before the assembly session, but around 6:20 a.m. last Monday he realised that the dormitories were not locked and so he instructed the house prefect to lock them.

He further explained that he was at one end of Bawa’s dormitory when he saw some students gathered at the other end and so he decided to find out what was happening.

"When I got there, I saw Bawa lying on the pavement and so I asked what the problem was and one of the students told me that Bawa had suffered an epileptic seizure," he stated.

The senior housemaster said he then asked the students to put a mattress under Bawa’s head, so that he would be protected.

He said he called the dispensary master, who  picked Bawa to the Bolgatanga Hospital but the boy died shortly on arrival.

He explained that it was the dispensary master who returned to tell him the sad news.

He described as untrue earlier media reports that alleged that Bawa had died through a head bash.

Case

The case has been forwarded to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service in the Bolgatanga municipality for further investigations.

The Head of the Senior Housemasters in the school, Mr Steven Awasinab, indicated that Bawa’s death had not been caused by his colleague and urged the police to thoroughly investigate the matter.
