Buokrom community appeals for government support

The people of Buokrom Estate in Kumasi have pleaded for the rehabilitation of roads in the area, describing the present state of affairs as disturbing.

They said due to their horrible nature most commercial drivers were refusing to operate there.

Those who brave it have also been taking undue advantage to charge unreasonably high fares.

Madam Margaret Barwuah, the assembly woman, said workers and traders, who travel to the city-centre daily to conduct business “have been going through a lot of hell”.

She said things often got worse after 4pm each day, adding that, the situation needed “to change and the change must happen quickly”.

She told the Ghana News Agency that she was aware that the roads had been awarded on contract with some culverts already done but for unexplained reasons the contractors have abandoned the project.

Madam Barwuah also complained about the lack of streetlights in the area and said that was creating security problems.

It would require the erection of about 100 electric poles and equal number of street bulbs to light up the place.

She said the darkness was providing perfect conditions for thieves to operate with impunity – snatching bags and other valuables from people.

The assembly member praised the Ashanti Regional Police Administration for opening a police post in the community to help tackle the crime rate.

She appealed to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to speed up construction works on two mechanized boreholes it had started at South Africa and “E-Line”, both in the community.
