Business thrives on Easter Monday in Kumasi

Business-minded people in Kumasi showed very little indication that yesterday was a holiday as traders, shoppers and others could be seen busily engaging in commercial activities at the central business district of Kejetia and Adum in the Kumasi Metropolitan Area (KMA).

Surprisingly, as early as 6.30 a.m., some of the shops had opened.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, Ekua Pokua, a secondhand clothes dealer, stated that since she started selling at Kejetia about 15 years ago, she had never celebrated any of the holidays.

“My only holiday is Sunday, or when there is a funeral. Apart from these two occasions, I don’t see why I would sit at home or visit places of amusement and spend the little I have earned through hard work”, she added.

Kwodwo Ntim, who sells female footwear, told the Daily Graphic that he used to visit Lake Bosomtwi every Easter Monday but the current economic hardship, coupled with the fact that his two children would have their schools re-opening soon, had caused him to work and save to pay their school fees.

Mrs Dorothy Mensah, a cosmetic shop owner, was of the view that most of her customers were hairdressers who would need some chemicals during such festivities.

She said she rather sold more on festive occasions than ordinary days, hence her decision to open her shop.
