Calm has returned to Kumawu  in the Ashanti Region after last Sunday’s stand-off between the police and supporters of a claimant to the Kumawu stool.

This follows the deployment of many police personnel to the town to ensure law and order.

According to the Effiduase Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Emmanuel Appiah, the eight suspects who were arrested in connection with the violence were being processed for court.

He warned that his outfit would deal with anybody who would disturb the prevailing peace in the area.“Eyes are watching us and we need to set a precedence so that people cannot take the law into their hands,” he said.

Background

There was a violent confrontation between supporters of one of the claimants to the Kumawu stool, Barima Tweneboa Kodua V, and the police during the celebration of the Akwasidae in the town last Sunday.

The police had to resort to the use of rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the followers of Barima Kodua V, who insisted he was the legitimate claimant to the stool.

That was after supporters of the other party had refused to heed to the advice of the police to celebrate the Akwasidae Festival at the chief’s premises to avoid a possible clash with the followers of  Barima Sarfo Tweneboa Kodua who were also preparing to celebrate the festival in the town.

The advice did not go down well with the supporters of the former who had wanted to parade their chief through the town and so pelted the police with stones.

Barima Kodua V is challenging the legitimacy of Barima Sarfo Tweneboa Kodua, who is said to have been accepted by the Asanteman Council as the Kumawumanhene.
