In a speech read on his behalf at the regional launch of the organisation’s 10th anniversary celebrations in Cape Coast, he said that would help improve environmental sanitation and good health in the country.

The nationwide anniversary celebration is on the theme “Zoomlion @ 10… Driving impactful waste management in Ghana and beyond”. The Central Regional launch is the third in the series of programmes lined up for the anniversary.

Sanitation

Mr Ricketts-Hagan said the country had not performed well in the area of environmental sanitation, and that available statistics had indicated that sanitation coverage in Ghana was just about 15 per cent.

He stated that the outbreak of cholera in some communities was another dimension of the effect of the environment on the health of Ghanaians and lauded Zoomlion Ghana Limited for setting out to drive impactful waste management in the country.

He said while the region prided itself as the hub of tourism and centre of excellence in education, it should be mindful of the fact that tourism and clean environment were bedfellows, thus the need for various stakeholders to unite and effectively address the sanitation challenges.

Collaboration

The minister also urged metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies to empower the traditional authorities with the needed logistics to motivate them to intensify their efforts at strengthening the National Sanitation Day programme.

Mr Rickets-Hagan, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Cape Coast South, lauded the success of the collaboration with Zoomlion over the decade. He further indicated that the government would continue to partner private organisations to accelerate the development of the country.

Commitment

The Central Regional Board Chairman of Zoomlion, Prof.  Edward Marfo Yiadom, said the company had become the leading waste management company over the past decade due to its diligence and commitment to the cause of sanitation.

The Regional Manager of Zoomlion, Mr. Ernest Kusi, said the company had introduced several services, public health programmes and initiatives as part of efforts to fight against poor sanitation and would not relent in its efforts.

The Chief of Abura, Nana Kojo Addae III, who presided over the ceremony, urged the company to deepen its collaboration with the various assemblies by responding promptly to their needs, and indicated the support of the traditional council to improve sanitation.
