China donates buses to govt

The Chinese government yesterday presented 17 buses to the government to serve the transportation needs of some state institutions.

The 35-seater Zhongtong buses cost the Chinese government 10 million Yuan and have been built to withstand the African terrain, according to the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Ms Sun Baohong.

The buses were donated under the Chinese government Grant Aid and in partial fulfilment of the economic and technical co-operation agreement signed between the two countries in 2009 and 2010.

Ms Sun expressed China’s commitment to continuing its good friendship with Ghana.

“We are committed to providing assistance to Ghana’s economic development and social progress within our capacity,” she said.

Ghana-China relations

Ghana–China diplomatic relations started in 1960 and have blossomed over the years, although dogged in recent times by concerns over some Chinese’s participation in illegal mining in Ghana.

Over the past 55 years, the two countries have had fruitful co-operation in areas including politics, health, the economy, military, education and culture.

In spite of the fruitful co-operation, the Chinese Ambassador said: “We can never be complacent. We still need to increase the high-level exchanges of visits and promote mutual political trust. We need to expand our co-operation in various areas and we need to advance the people-people exchanges.”

“Both China and Ghana are developing countries and we face the same development tasks and similar challenges. We share common values and are dedicated to carrying out mutually beneficial co-operation,” Ms Sun said.

Take care of buses

The Minister of Transport, Mrs Dzifa Attivor, who received the buses, commended the Chinese government for its continuous support.

She, however, urged the beneficiary institutions to “go strictly according to the maintenance schedule for the buses to ensure that the buses operate to achieve their designed economic life.”

According to her, it was only when the buses were taken care of that the Chinese government would be willing to make extra donations.
