The equipment includes three X-ray baggage scanners, three wall-held metal scanners, 100 hand-held metal scanners and three human body metal detectors.
The items were received by the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Edward Doe Adjaho.
The donation was made upon a request by Parliament to the Chinese government to assist in strengthening security within the precincts of the Legislature.
Background
Following terrorist attacks in neighbouring countries in recent times, Parliament has beefed up security in a bid to forestall any offensive move by radical groups within and outside the sub-region who use terror as a political weapon.
The security measures put in place, however, have proved to be inadequate, as the Legislature has been unable to procure the required number of scanners and other electronic equipment to ensure the safety of members of Parliament and others who use the premises.
The few already installed broke down in the latter part of last year, out of which three have been repaired.
Meeting
At a meeting before the donation, Mr Adjaho called for further strengthening of the relations between Ghana and China.
He said although the economic and cultural ties between the two countries were quite healthy, there was the need to deepen the relationship further.
Mr Yu, for his part, said he was impressed by Ghana’s beautiful environment and added that the country had made considerable progress in the areas of the economy and governance.
He emphasised the need for the relationship between the two countries to be deepened.
