Danquah Institute invited South African three to Ghana – BNI

A high-level source within the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) has told Graphic Online that policy think tank, Danquah Institute (DI), invited the three retired South African former policemen who are being held by the bureau for allegedly engaging in activities that threaten national security.

The three — Major Ahmed Shaik Hazis (retd), 54; Warrant Officer Denver Dwayhe, 33, and Captain Mlungiseli Jokani, 45 — were arrested at the EL-Capitano Hotel where they had been based since arriving in Ghana.

They were said to be training 15 men in various security drills, including unarmed combat, weapon handling, VIP protection techniques and rapid response exercises.

The men were reportedly members of the security detail of the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, and his running-mate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

The three South Africans were each granted a GhȻ20,000 bail with one surety when they were arraigned before the Accra Circuit Court on Thursday afternoon, but the BNI re-arrested them.

The BNI source told Graphic Online that the visa application forms of the three revealed that they were invited by the DI and the document was signed by the Director of DI.

According to the source, although it was indicated that they were to come and hold a series of meetings with DI, they did not hold any meeting with the think tank.

“They were rather found at Agona Duakwa training people on weapon handling and rapid response operations.

“Secondly, we are also aware that their visa application forms indicated that they were going to stay at Alisa Hotel and Movenpick but we are all aware that they never stayed there," the source said.

The source added that one of the applications forms indicated that the invitation was extended by McDann Shipping Company.

Meanwhile, the BNI has denied raiding the offices of DI and the home of Capt (rtd) Edmund Koda, the head of security of the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo.
