Disables implore petitioners, respondents to respect court verdict

The Ghana Federation of the Disabled (GFD) has called on the petitioners and respondents in the election petition case to accept and respect the verdict of the Supreme Court to guarantee sustainable peace for development.

The Federation said in times of armed conflict persons with disability suffer most, because many are unable to run for safety.

Mr Yaw Ofori-Debrah, President of the Federation, made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Monday.

He said: “The population of persons with disability in the country is already alarming and Ghana cannot afford to accept more.

"We are begging all parties in the election petition not only to accept the verdict but also respect it whichever way it goes.”

The President said in many conflict situations the plight of persons with disability is often ignored, particularly in peace building or post-conflict reconstruction.

He said there had been several conflict situations in parts of the country where many persons with disability suffered severe violence or were displaced but no one gave them assistance.

“It is regrettable that in armed conflict only children and women are mentioned but one hardly hears of persons with disability,” he said.

Mr Ofori-Debrah, therefore, appealed to parties in the election petition to refrain from prejudicial comments that would potentially derail the peace required to propel Ghana’s economic and social development agenda.
