Driver’s mate killed in accident

A driver’s mate who jumped off a Sprinter bus that was running into a ditch to save his life rather died as a result when the commercial vehicle landed on him at Shikpong Tele, near Amasaman in Accra last Sunday.

Six passengers on the vehicle also sustained injuries when the vehicle veered off the road and somersaulted.

The identities of the passengers and the deceased were not immediately known.

Eyewitnesses’ account

Eyewitnesses, including some of the passengers on the Sprinter bus with registration number GW7669-14 which was heading towards Nsawam from Achimota, claimed the driver was sleeping and lost control.

One of the eyewitnesses, Mr Ebo Quarshie, said the accident happened about 7:41 p.m. last Sunday.

He said he saw the driver’s mate jumping out of the vehicle, but the vehicle landed on him after it had somersaulted, killing him instantly.

With the help of some onlookers, he said, the injured were taken to the Amasaman Government Hospital, while others were taken to the 37 Military Hospital for treatment.

Police

The police, he said, after receiving distress calls from some sympathisers, arrived at the scene.

When contacted, the Commander in charge of the Amasaman Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr Amoako Boansi, confirmed the incident.

He said the driver of the vehicle, who was also injured, was still receiving medical attention.
