E.P Church pastors’ wives donate to Ho prison inmates

The National Pastors’ Spouses Association of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (EPCG) has donated food items, including bags of rice and sugar, loaves of bread, toiletries, detergents and toothpaste, to the Ho Central Prisons and the Ho Female Prison in the Volta Region. The cost of the provisions was estimated at about GH¢3,000.

The donation was made at a four-day national conference of the association held at Ho.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the National President of the association, Mrs Annie Gaewu, noted that the presentation was the group’s way of supporting the needy in society. Moreover, she said, it was aimed at complementing efforts the government was making in taking care of inmates of the two prisons.

Addressing the inmates based on quotes from Psalm 23 in the Holy Bible, Mrs Gaewu urged the prisoners to not lose hope in life but instead focus on the Lord with confidence for Him to pull them through the difficult times.

DSP Christian Anyrator, who received the items on behalf of the authorities of the Prisons Service, thanked the association for the gift.

He enumerated a number of difficulties the Ho Central Prisons was facing; they included lack of a standby electric generator to serve as an alternative in cases of power cuts, lack of transport and inadequate residential accommodation for prison officers.

He said the current load-shedding exercise by the Electricity Company of Ghana posed a security risk for prison officers placed on guard duties in the night.

Mr Anyrator therefore appealed to corporate organisations and philanthropists to come to the aid of the Ho Prisons since the government alone was not able to cover all its needs .

The Ho Central Prison was established in 1963 to accommodate 170 inmates. However, the prison is presently overcrowded with 464 male inmates made up of both convicts and remand prisoners. The Female Prisons has 11 inmates.
