About 3,790 people, including police personnel living in the area, attended the event, which was dubbed, “Early detection saves lives.”

Those found to have serious medical conditions were referred to nearby health centres for treatment.

Besides the free medical screening, the residents were educated on the importance of adopting good eating habits, regular exercie and medical check-ups.

The association holds the health screening every year, in the hope of improving the health of residents.

Screening

The President of the Ghana diabetes Association, Mrs Elizabeth Esi Denyoh, told the Daily Graphic  that most people did  not visit health facilities and were, therefore, ignorant of their health status.

She also said many of those attended to, especially the elderly who were diagnosed as diabetic, did not know they had the problem.

She added that the country had made great strides in bringing development to the doorstep of the people but there was still more room for improvement.

Other perspectives

The Medical Officer at the Kasoa Polyclinic, Dr Paul Dsane-Aidoo, advised the residents to visit the health facility regularly and desist from self-medication.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Awutu Senya East, Dr Adam Nuhu, commended the association for the exercise.

He said the initiative had brought satisfaction to persons who otherwise could not afford medical care as well as those who were unaware of certain health conditions.

The Omankrado of the Awutu Traditional Area, Nai Kwao Kwabi Klotey, expressed gratitude to the association for seeking the wellbeing of the people.

A number of the patients interviewed said they were thankful for the support from the GDA and urged the team to continue the good work.
