Ebola Outbreak: AFN urges community-led action amid escalation in Central Africa
The Africa Feature Network (AFN) has expressed concern over the escalating Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, which has been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
With multiple confirmed and suspected cases of the Bundibugyo strain, AFN calls for stronger community-led responses, enhanced public awareness, cross-border surveillance and greater investment in African public health systems.
In a press statement released on Tuesday, May 19, the organization emphasized the importance of accurate information, local engagement and preparedness to curb further transmission and protect vulnerable populations.
The statement signed by the CEO, Peter Aowa said “The Africa Feature Network stands in solidarity with affected families, healthcare workers, emergency responders, and communities currently facing the devastating effects of the outbreak.”
“We recognize the pressure being placed on already strained health systems, especially in vulnerable and conflict-affected areas where access to healthcare remains limited.”
The network also called on governments, health institutions, partners, media, and communities to work together to help contain infectious disease outbreaks in Africa.
“We also call for increased investment in African public health preparedness, research, and emergency response systems to ensure communities are better equipped to respond to future outbreaks and health emergencies,” the statement added.
