EC solicits support from parliament for release of funds for limited voters registration

The Electoral Commission (EC) yesterday held an emergency meeting with the Special Budget Committee of Parliament to solicit its assistance to compel the Ministry of Finance to release funds for the limited voters registration exercise scheduled for next month.

It is the view of the EC that if funds are not released timeously for the exercise, it may have to be rescheduled,  a situation which would affect the electoral timetable.

The EC's delegation to the closed door meeting  was led by its Chairperson,  Mrs Charlotte Osei.

Inconclusive meeting

A source close to the committee told the Daily Graphic that the EC delegation made the point that it might have to reschedule the time for the limited registration exercise if money was not released soon.

It said if that happened, the timetable for the 2016 elections would be affected.

The source said the meeting was inconclusive and added that the committee had scheduled a meeting with the EC and the Ministry of Finance today to address the situation.

November polls

Eligible Ghanaians will go to the polls in November to elect a President and parliamentarians.

The EC set up a committee chaired by an eminent jurist, Mr Justice VCRAC Crabbe, to determine whether the commission should compile a new voters register. This followed calls by some political parties and civil society groups in the country for the compilation of a new register. After soliciting views from stakeholders, the committee recommended a limitedvoters registration exercise as part of measures to update the voters roll.
