Educational heads advised to upgrade themselves

The founder of the Salt and Light Ministries, Rev Joyce Aryee, has called on headteachers and heads of institutions to upgrade themselves to ensure improvement in educational standards.

According to her, headteachers must not see their positions as an end in itself but must constantly encourage themselves to further their education to be abreast of the developing techniques of providing quality education.

40th anniversary launch

She was speaking at the launch of the 40th anniversary of the Sap’s School Limited in Accra on the theme “Excellence in Education: The way forward.”

Rev Aryee charged basic schools to pursue quality education based on excellence, saying excellence in education was vital to the development of children, as the development of the society largely depended on the type of education transferred to children.

She, however, bemoaned the fact that currently “education in the country is merely a process of cramming facts into children’s heads and rewarding them with certificates rather than focusing on excellence.”

Rev Aryee added that in the pursuit of excellence in education, academic training must give children the training they needed to be agents of change in their society and, at the same time, be used to develop the child’s character.

She stated that children deserved the best teachers, one held in high esteem by citizens, well trained and supported on the job and compensated for their hard work, adding that “To achieve excellence in education, the teaching profession must be strengthened by broadening the role and expectations for teachers and matching those with respect and compensation.”

Spirituality

She urged school heads to introduce spirituality to the education they provided, adding that to develop the children to attain academic excellence, spirituality and not mere religious studies must be instilled in them

The Headmistress of the school,  Mrs Sama Florence Grant-Chuku, called on parents to be more committed to the education of their children, and also urged them to get involved  in school activities.

The launch of the anniversary, performed by Rev Aryee, was used to unveil the plan of a proposed school auditorium; the anniversary cloth and other souvenirs; while the Headmistress of Wesley Girls’ Senior High School, Mrs Betty Djokoto, cut the sod for the  commencement of work on the auditorium.
